A lot went down during that episode and to help “Walking Dead” fans prepare for tonight’s show we’ve put together a list of everything that happened in episode 8 and what to expect in episode 9, titled “After.”
1. Hershel and The Governor are dead.
In episode 8, The Governor beheaded Hershel. Rick pleaded with the Governor not to kill him but sadly had to watch as Hershel was murdered. Also during that episode Michonne stabbed the Governor with Lily finishing the job and killing him.
“Walking Dead” creator Robert Kirkman had previously said that the group doesn’t handle Hershel’s death very well.
“Hershel was a father figure and a mentor,” Andrew Lincoln told Entertainment Weekly. “He was the bedrock for everybody, he was moral conscious.”
2. Baby Judith is missing (and presumed dead).
During the attack at the prison, Rick and Carl stumble upon baby Judith’s empty, bloody car seat. There’s no sign of the infant and since the prison is swarming with zombies, it’s presume that Judith died during the attack.
Lincoln told EW that his character and Carl are both convinced they will never see the baby again, which leaves them both distraught. Kirkman hasn’t revealed what happened to baby Judith but did say the mystery would be solved in tonight’s episode.
3. The group at the prison has separated and fending for themselves.
After the attack, the group at the prison was forced to split up. It was already revealed that Michonne is traveling by herself (and has two new pets) while the others have broken off into smaller groups.
4. Carl takes the lead.
According to several reports, Carl has a standalone episode. He has been featured in several sneak peeks coaxing zombies from an abandoned house he and Rick are staying at. It’s been rumored that Carl takes on more a leadership role as Rick tries to get his strength back up.
“Just wait, all I will say is just wait for what this kid [Chandler Riggs] is going to do this season,” Lincoln told Comicbook.com. “He I think has done one of the best episodes certainly this season, and he kind of carries it. It’s beautiful what he’s done.”
“The Walking Dead” airs at 9 p.m. on AMC and online with log-in information on AMC.com

The Walking Dead Season 4 Episode 9: After weeks of waiting, The Walking Dead mid-season premiere is set for tonight at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific on AMC.
Let’s refresh ourselves on what happened last time.
Given the amount of time that’s passed since the mid-season finale in December, you may need a refresh on what happened in The Walking Dead season 4, episode 9.
1) Hershel and The Governor have died. In a shoot out at the prison, The Governor kills Hershel, and Michonne kills The Governor (a.k.a. Brian) moments later.
2) Speaking of the prison… bye, prison! The gun fire battle also sent the prison up in flames, so now Rick and company are in need of a new place to call home. Rumors indicate that by the end of season 4, they’ll have a new place.
3) All of the survivors are out on their own. Numerous promos (viewable below) show that each of the good humans are on the run by themselves. Some of them are in very small groups of two – maybe three – but the mid-season premiere will show how they all cope without being in a bigger group setting.
4) Baby Judith may or may not be dead. Rick and Carl believe she’s been killed, but viewers think someone like Beth may’ve picked her up. If so, we can’t wait to see the reunion between the father, son, and daughter. Hypable readers have speculated wildly about whether or not she’s alive.

Over the two months that The Walking Dead has been off air, AMC has released numerous promos. You can watch a couple of them below. The first video is a behind-the-scenes look at what’s ahead in the second half of the season and includes the most amount of footage out of any preview:
The Walking Dead season 4, episode 9 titled “After” airs Sunday, February 9 at 9 p.m. eastern/pacific.
AMC’s The Walking Dead returns tonight from its winter hiatus to pick up the pieces after the prison was taken down by the Governor and his followers in the Season 4 midseason finale. Tonight’s Season 4 midseason premiere is titled ‘After’ and will tug at the emotions of several core characters when we watch The Walking Dead Season 4 midseason premiere online streaming or in HD on AMC. The official streams for episode 409 are not live or free, but will get the job done. Spoilers for the previous episode are present below.
The Season 4 midseason finale turned out to be what many thought would be the Season 3 finale as the Governor and his followers, armed with a tank and machine guns, parked themselves outside the prison and demanded to see Rick while holding Michonne and Hershel hostage. Rick had no choice but to come out and talk as the Governor had Michonne’s sword and his prisoners on their knees.
Rick tried to bargain with the Governor, claiming there was plenty room in the prison for both groups. And he was right as there were unused cell blocks, not to mention the illness that swept through the prison had cut down on the population by at least 15. Unfortunately for Rick and his friends, the Governor didn’t believe Rick and had already made up his mind to take the prison by force. He announced his intentions by hacking at Hershel’s neck with the sword.
With Hershel mortally wounded, the Governor ordered his crew to attack and “kill them all,” then began to beat down on a wounded Rick whom had been shot. Rick was in the process of being strangled to death by the Governor when Michonne thrust her sword through the Governor’s torso, which was followed up a short time later by Lilly putting the Governor out of his misery.
The gunfire drew walkers to the prison and the tank took down the fences, resulting in the prison falling to the undead. Rick’s group was broken up as they fled in different directions. Daryl and Beth went one way, Rick and Carl another, and Michonne took off on her own. Maggie and Glenn were separated, and Tyreese found himself with Lizzie and Mika. Lily and her sister are still alive, and Bob Stookey is on the run as well.
In tonight’s midseason return, the framework for the series will shift to focus on individual stories rather than the group as a whole. In particular, Rick and Carl will be highlighted tonight, as will Michonne. Other characters such as Daryl, Beth, Tyreese, Maggie and Glenn will have to wait their turn until the next episode at the earliest.
